Meta has rolled out a new batch of updates to Edits, its video editing app tied to Instagram. The release includes Halloween-themed fonts, sound effects and animations, 13 new text animations, and beat-synced effects such as flashing lights and zooms that automatically match a clip's music. Caption tools gain extra styles and bulk editing, while new automated color correction and per-clip volume boosts up to 150% round out the update.

Edits' carousel editor, launched on iOS earlier this month, is now also available on Android, and a new filter was created with Nigerian musician Arya Starr. Meta says a desktop version is coming soon, which would move the app closer to being a full production studio rather than a quick mobile editor.

For sports social teams, the timing suits Halloween content such as players in costume, spooky matchday graphics or eerie highlight reels. Beat-synced effects can speed up hype edits for goals and dunks, and bulk caption editing helps when producing accessible clips at volume. Clubs with small content teams should test Edits as a free alternative for Reels and carousels, especially once desktop support arrives.

Australia weighs algorithm opt-out rule as Instagram's Mosseri warns of shrinking reach

Australia's government has started early consultation on rules that would require social platforms to offer a switch to turn off algorithmic recommendations, with a non-algorithmic, following-only feed as the default. Communications Minister Annika Wells argues engagement-driven feeds reward attention over well-being, and says platforms must respect a user's choice rather than burying it. Nothing has been formally tabled yet, and the proposal is still open for community input.

Instagram chief Adam Mosseri has pushed back, saying on Threads that a following-only feed would mean a smaller Instagram and less reach for everyone, including creators. Separately, commentator Michael Shellenberger has framed the plan as a speech-control measure, though key provisions he criticised have been removed or are being revised during consultation.

Instagram tests 90-minute Features videos, Clips as Reels and Series for creators

Instagram has started testing a set of long-form video tools. Features lets selected creators publish videos of up to 90 minutes, suited to podcasts, vlogs and interviews, and is expanding from Brazil to select US creators from October 26. Clips as Reels lets creators link up to eight Reels back to a longer video, while Series groups episodic Reels under a single theme. Phone-as-remote control is also coming to Instagram's connected TV app.

For sports teams, this opens the door to hosting full press conferences, behind-the-scenes documentaries, club podcasts or extended player interviews directly on Instagram, where fan communities already live. Clips as Reels is a natural fit for cutting short highlights that funnel fans into a full matchday film, and Series can package recurring formats like weekly training diaries or a season-long docuseries.

Manchester United and Snapdragon turn Champions League Starting XI graphics into illustrated portraits

Manchester United has commissioned Stanley Chow, a local illustrator and lifelong supporter, to draw custom portraits of the club's Starting XI for its Champions League fixtures this season. Each player appears in the Snapdragon-branded kit, and the artwork is photographed on Snapdragon-powered phones against scenic backdrops in host cities such as Como and Madrid.

On Instagram, United is pairing the carousel with the platform's new multiple captions feature, labelling each player as fans swipe through the portraits. The approach gives a routine matchday asset a premium, collectible feel while weaving the sponsor's product into the story rather than simply stamping a logo on a template.
