A Pew Research report released on Oct. 23, based on a June survey of more than 3,500 US adults, found that 58% consider social media an important way to follow current events. Another 13% name social apps as their single most important source of information. In Pew's 2022 edition of the same study, those figures were 43% and 5%.
For sports social teams, this confirms that club and league accounts increasingly act as primary newsrooms rather than secondary channels. Many fans will first hear about signings, injuries, lineups or ticket news in their feeds, not on a website or through traditional media. Official accounts should prioritize speed, accuracy and clear, native-format announcements so they become the trusted first source.
The report also notes that platform algorithms tend to amplify controversial content and that moderation is loosening. Clubs and athletes should plan for rumors spreading quickly by publishing verified updates early, pinning key information and coordinating messaging across platforms. Being consistently reliable is a brand asset that also strengthens value for sponsors attached to official content.
